Allman Brothers Band Co-Founder Dickey Betts Passes Away at 80

Legendary Guitarist Remembered for His Contributions to Southern Rock

Jacksonville, Florida - November 24, 2023

Dickey Betts, a co-founder and guitarist for the iconic Allman Brothers Band, has passed away at the age of 80. The news was confirmed by his family in a post on Instagram.

Betts, along with his fellow band members, helped pioneer the Southern rock genre in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their distinctive blend of blues, country, and rock music captivated audiences and garnered critical acclaim.

Betts was known for his exceptional guitar skills and songwriting contributions to the band's most famous songs, including "Ramblin' Man" and "Blue Sky." His slide guitar playing became a defining characteristic of the Allman Brothers' sound.

The band experienced both triumph and tragedy throughout its existence. Betts survived a motorcycle accident in 1976 that sidelined him for an extended period. He eventually returned to the band but left permanently in 2000.

In recent years, Betts continued to perform and record as a solo artist. He also released several collaborative projects with other musicians, including the Dickey Betts Band and Great Southern.

Betts' passing has left a void in the music community and among fans of the Allman Brothers Band. His legacy as a legendary guitarist, songwriter, and band member will endure for generations to come.
