2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami

On December 26, 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a major earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 Mw struck off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake ruptured a 900-mile stretch along the Indian and Australian plates, 31 miles below the ocean floor. Rather than delivering one violent jolt, the quake lasted an agonizing eight to ten minutes, sending a series of devastating tsunamis across the Indian Ocean.

The earthquake and subsequent tsunamis caused widespread devastation in Indonesia, with the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra being the hardest hit. Over 230,000 people were killed, and over 1.7 million were displaced from their homes. The disaster also had a significant economic impact, with damage and losses estimated at over USD 15 billion.

The Indonesian government and international aid organizations responded to the disaster with a massive relief effort. However, the response was hampered by the scale of the disaster and the lack of infrastructure in the affected areas. In the years since the tsunami, Indonesia has made significant progress in rebuilding and recovering from the disaster. However, the scars of the tsunami remain, and the people of Indonesia continue to live with the legacy of the tragedy.
