Philippines Divorce Bill Reaches House Plenary Level

Catholic Bishops Voice Strong Opposition

The divorce bill, which Catholic bishops have vehemently opposed for decades, has now reached the plenary level of the House of Representatives in the Philippines. The bill, officially known as the "WEB Divorce Act of the Philippines," was filed on July 7, 2022, by Representative Robinhood C. Padilla and referred to the Committee on Population and Family Relations.

Absolute Divorce Recognized

The absolute divorce bill approved by the House does not recognize no-fault quickie drive-thru email or notarial divorces, as stated by Representative Padilla. This means that a court must determine fault in order to grant a divorce, based on specific grounds such as infidelity, physical abuse, or abandonment.

Final Reading Approval

The divorce bill was approved by the House of Representatives on third and final reading on Wednesday. This signifies a significant step towards legalizing divorce in the Philippines, which is currently one of the few countries in the world that does not allow absolute divorce.

Previous Endorsement

In August 2021, the House Committee on Population and Family Relations endorsed the reinstitution of the divorce bill. The bill's supporters argue that it will provide a legal and accessible means for individuals to dissolve their marriages, especially in cases of irreparable breakdown.
